This is a monument in the old Penuel burial ground in Llantrisant. The verse on the side, a quotation from John Henry Newman's hymn 'Lead, Kindly Light', is perhaps unusual for a monument in a Welsh burial-ground, even one so late as the date on this one.
But not unknown. David Davies of Penarth, a friend of Spurgeon's, quoted from 'lead kindly light' in his 1909 commentary on Job, if memory serves. He certainly quotes from the hymn in his memoirs (1925).
I am the minister at Bethel Evangelical Free Church, Hanley, Stoke on Trent. My connection to the Highlands is highly dubious, and relates to a direct ancestor some generations back on my mother's side - my family actually comes from Chesire. I have an inordinate interest in theological works of high quality and Reformed bent. An interest in history is the all-but-inevitable result of being the son of a history professor.
